Rockingham castle 13 Miles
This castle, built by William the Conqueror, has been home to the Watson family for around 500 years. In medieval times, Richard the Lion Heart used the castle and King John left his treasure chest in the Great Hall (and it's still there!).
It was Henry VIII who granted the castle to the Watson family who have owned it ever since. During Victorian times, Charles Dickens (a friend of the family) was a visitor and Chesney Wold, in his story Bleak House, was inspired by Rockingham.
James Saunders Watson is the present owner and the castle is also his family home. Visitors can tour the castle and the grounds, which overlook the magnificent Welland Valley.
